postheadericon Yeast Infection By Taking Antibiotics

If your sexual partner has a yeast infection then there's a good chance that you could also get the yeast infection from them. Although yeast infections are not regarded as a sexually transmitted disease, they can be passed back and forth through sexual intercourse. That's why, although it's not all that common, a male yeast infection can occur. In these cases medical help should be sought first of all to determine whether indeed a male yeast infection is present. You then have the choice of getting prescription medications to treat the infection or you have the choice of using a natural treatment. Although most of the natural cures are designed for the cure of a vaginal infection, and not a male infection quite a few, if not all of the remedies can be adapted to suit the male form. There is also the choice these days of looking into over-the-counter cures for a male infection. Again here as well, most of the medication is aimed at vaginal infections but that doesn't mean that it won't work, especially if the medication comes in cream, or pill form. These are easy to take and don't involve the use of such things as vaginal suppositories or boluses which are slightly difficult to take as treatment for a male infection! If in doubt however about these over-the-counter medications you can always ask your doctor whether any of them are right to cure male infection symptoms. And if you don't feel fully comfortable using any of these over-the-counter cures or natural remedies, you can always stick with good old fashioned prescription medications which also work just as well. Again, although the medications are aimed mainly at women they are also good in the case of male infection, and if they come in pill or cream form, can be used in much the same manner. One particular medication which bears some looking into is called Diflucan. It's a prescription medication but you only need to take one tablet. This one dosage is all that's needed to clear yeast infections, and it should work the same for a male infection as well. Again, if in doubt, ask your doctor about this particular medication. Then again, a few common sense measures can also help to cure, and in some cases prevent male yeast infection from occurring at all. These include but are not limited to, abstaining from sexual contact and intercourse until the infection has cleared up, and changing your diet to reflect a healthier lifestyle like staying away from refined foods, carbohydrates, sugars, alcohol, fermented foods, yeasty foods such as breads, and red meats. It might sound tough at first but it can be done, and these measures along with whatever remedy you're taking can help in the fight against male yeast infection.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is there a way to prevent yeast infection while taking antibiotics?
I have to take antibiotics for a week and typically my past experience they cause me to have a yeast infection (since it kills the bacteria that can fight yeast). Is there a way to prevent it from happening
I bought some Probiotic Acidophilus. Says "Immune Function" Has 10mg or Lactobacillus Acidophilus.

    • ANSWER:
Take acidophilus, it's a probiotic. You should be able to find it over the counter at a pharmacy near some of the natural stuff. It will say for intestinal health or something. I have the same problem it works!

  2. QUESTION:

My daughter shes taking augmentin antibiotics for 4 days now. It seems like she has a yeast infection because she's having some discharge and icthing. Is that possible while your on antibiotics for couple of days only?

    • ANSWER:
It's definitely possible, especially if the antibiotics are strong. Call her doctor and he can prescribe something to help with the yeast infection, and/or a different antibiotic. BUT do not stop the antibiotic without talking to the doctor first, as this creates a more powerful strain of whatever bacteria she's fighting off.

  3. QUESTION:
How can i avoid a yeast infection while taking an antibiotic?
I am very sick with a sinus infection and my doctor prescribed me an antibiotic. The problem is i really don't want to deal with a yeast infection. So what can i do to avoid getting a yeast infection and still take the antibiotics?

  4. QUESTION:
How to avoid a yeast infection while taking antibiotics?
I am currently taking the antibiotic Cephalexin. My doctor said it is likely that I will get a yeast infection while taking it. Is there any way to avoid getting a yeast infection?

    • ANSWER:
Actually, antibiotics often cause yeast infections. The reason you get a yeast infection after using antibiotics is because antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body, both the bacteria (the ones that you took antibiotics to get rid of) and the good bacteria (the ones that help your body fight off yeast infections). As a result the yeast is left to grow without any good bacteria to ward it off. Many people take OTC creams like monistat to treat the yeast infection, but often times that only temporarily fix the problem. More often than not you'll just end up with a reoccuring yeast infection. The best way to stop it permanently is to re-establish your body's balance of good bacteria and yeast.

Personally I think the best approach is the natural way. Basically the reason you have a yeast infection is because there's an imbalance in your body. A healthy person has a balance between the yeast in their body and the good bacteria in their body.

Too much yeast, you have a yeast infection. Too much bacteria, you have a bacterial infection.

So, when you have a yeast infection you essentially have too much yeast in your body. The natural way to treat it and bring back that balance is to starve the yeast and introduce more good bacteria into your body.

Oh and BTW - That's why you often get relief from using the over the counter meds temporarily, and then the yeast infection comes back. The creams aren't changing the source of the problem. They are just killing the yeast they come in contact with, and not balancing the yeast/bacteria in your body and actually sometimes end up making things a lot worse.

Oh BTW2 - That's also why many times you'll get a yeast infection after using antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria in your body, the good and the bad. When that happens the balance between the yeast and good bacteria is off once again and you get a yeast infection.

Things you can add to your diet (to help promote good bacteria) are live yogurt cultures (or take Acidophilus), plenty of water, fresh vegetables, lots of protein rich foods, whey protein, raw garlic, nuts, seeds, oils, millet, rice and oat brans.

Things you should remove from your diet (to starve the yeast) are all sodas, sugars, fruit, fermented foods, foods containing white flour, alcohol (especially beer), antacids and any product that has yeast or mold.

You can change your diet in conjunction with using the creams that you've been using and that will speed up the recovery significantly. But what I would also recommend is to use a homeopathic solution instead. I always feel if there's a natural way to do something, then it's best to avoid the chemicals. I would look for an natural product, that can be taken orally to promote re-growth of the good bacteria in your body.

There are a few out there, I think they are probably all pretty good. One that I have used and was very effective for me was is yeastrol.

If you're interesting in finding out more I've added a link that has some more info.

  5. QUESTION:
How to treat a yeast infection in a man?
I got a really bad yeast infection from taking antibiotics for months. I was treated. Me and my boyfriend have unprotected sex (I am on birth control) and I believe he has one and has passed another yeast infection to me. I'm assuming he has one, but not sure how to treat it. I should've brought it to my gyno's attention, but didn't. I have heard to use the external monistat cream on him, but not sure where exactly and for how long.

So how do I treat him for a yeast infection?

    • ANSWER:
Cannistan anti-fungal cream, u basically clean and dry the penis put a bit of cream on twice a day over a couple of days (or as long as needed) and it will clear up.

  6. QUESTION:
Can vaginal yeast infections spread to the anus?
I have a vaginal yeast infection from taking antibiotics and am starting to have the same feelings & itch down the back area. I was wondering if its possible for the yeast infection to spread to the anal area?

    • ANSWER:
Yes. They can spread anywhere moist and dark, including your armpits, your mouth, and any fold of skin. Take a yeast infection cure, and in the future, always eat active culture yogurt while taking antibiotics to keep repopulating the healthy bacteria in your body. You can eat some now to help the yeast infection cure work better.

      Good luck.

  7. QUESTION:
Am I most liekly getting a yeast infection now, after taking antibiotics ?
I have been taking Bactrim and some other type of antibotic for over 2 weeks now because I was suffering from 3 merca infections (staph) on my legs. Now they are pretty much healed up and gone. I know taking antibiotics causes yeast infections afterwards. The past 3 days my vagina feels like its itchy (sort of inside, near my labia area). I don't see alot of white things in it. (i ve had a yeast infection once before about 5 years ago). Do you think the itchiness is b/c of that?

I'm supposed to be on antibiotics for acne for along time, just started taking them a week ago and have gotten a yeast infection. I took a fluconazole pill will I continue to get a yeast infection while I take my antibiotics? Should I stop taking them?

Actually, antibiotics often cause yeast infections. 9. QUESTION:
Why does my vagina hurt after having a yeast infection?
I got a yeast infection from taking antibiotics then my doctor prescribed the diflucan pill. It's been over a week the yeast infection seems to be cleared up but my vagina still hurts when I use the bathroom and try to have sex what can I do?

    • ANSWER:
maybe get it checked out again the yeast infection might not be gone

  10. QUESTION:
How can eating yogurt with active cultures prevent a yeast infection?
Women often get yeast infections after taking antibiotics, because the drug kills off the natural bacteria and yeast takes over. I've heard that eating yogurt with active cultures can help replace the natural bacteria. But...how are those bacteria supposed to get from the digestive tract to the reproductive tract? Or does the yogurt only benefit the gut and does nothing to prevent yeast infections?

I doubt it could be through the bloodstream, because any bacteria in the blood is a serious medical condition. If it's across the skin, it would seem you'd have a hygiene problem.
I don't know who's right, so I'll put it up for a vote.

    • ANSWER:
I actually got better results from eating the yogurt and even when taking actual acidophillous tablets. When you take either of these it goes thru the blood system and in to the digestive tract to help restore the balance of good bacteria there.

Taking acidophillous will help prevent yeast infections. I did it for some time taking the acidophillous tablets and it worked pretty well for me.

I would recommend checking with your dr to be on the safe side.

  11. QUESTION:
How long will a yeast infection take to cure without any special treatment?
I recently had a urinary tract infection, due to unsanitary bathroom conditions at school, and took antibiotics. though the UTI was cured, a yeast infection developed and is now the main source of discomfort. I'm planning on picking up monistat from the store, but I'm also wondering if it is okay to just let it heal naturally... and how that would work and how long. thank you.

    • ANSWER:
you can,t you need med. or it,ll just get worse

  12. QUESTION:
Is it safe to take antibiotics for a uti if it's not a course of them?
I had a uti a few months ago and was prescribed a course of antibiotics, 2 a day for 3 days, however I did not finish them but it did go away anyway. However, I think it's returned and I still have 2 pills left from last time. Is it safe to take these and hope that these two do the trick? Also, is there any way to reduce the chance of getting a yeast infection whilst taking antibiotics for a uti?

    • ANSWER:
      NO NO NO

Possibly the reason it came back is because you didn't finish the whole course last time.

When you don't complete the course the strongest bacteria are the ones that survive so you are potentially breeding a stronger version of these bacteria for the whole world.

ALWAYS take a full course of antibiotics as prescribed.

      NEVER taks a partial course.

  13. QUESTION:
How can I avoid a yeast infection while I'm taking antibiotics, and steroids.?
I have to take antibiotics, and steroids for 2 months for a sinus infection. I already have a yeast infection and have taken the medicine. It seems to be coming back, I am wondering what I can do to avoid this.

    • ANSWER:
Ahhh, hey tami b, so antibiotics (especially taken for that long) can lead to recurring yeast infections because the antibiotics kill the bad guys but also the GOOD guys.

That's why everyone says eat yogurt. Don't just eat yogurt-- get probiotic supplements to fight back with the good guys!

Even yeast infection medicine can do this. When that happens, the yeast that causes yeast infection can adapt to the antibiotics and keep coming back!!

That's a really crappy place to be in-- I've had recurring yeast infections for that very reason-- I was on a long course of antiobiotics for a sinus infection!!!

Now, what can you do to avoid it? Trust me when I say it takes a little bit of effort.. go ahead and start to take probiotic supplements like I suggested earlier. Also try to eat a balanced diet-- you have to treat the root cause, not just the symptoms! Which is exactly what antibiotics do NOT do. There are AWESOME cures on this blog I have (I put it in the sources) that literally saved me from recurring yeast infections I had for a lonnnnng time. Visit the blog and do what she says.

  14. QUESTION:
Is it safe to have an abortion while I have a yeast infection?
Just started OTC treatment yesterday for a yeast infection I got from taking antibiotics for a sinus infection. Is it safe to have an abortion tomorrow or do I need to wait? Only looking for medical advice, please keep your moral opinions to yourself. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
I'm not actually sure. Your best bet would be to call the clinic performing your abortion and explain the above to them. I wouldn't suspect it would be a problem for a medical abortion, but if you're having a surgical abortion there might be concerns of the infection spreading.

  15. QUESTION:
why do i get a yeast infection every time i take antibiotics?
i swear nearly every time i have to take an antibiotic for something i end up with a yeast infection...anyone know why that is?

    • ANSWER:
When you take antibiotics it kills bacteria.
In the vagina there is bacteria that is good.
      It neutralizes the cells.

When taking antibiotics it kills the good and bad
bacteria. This is why eating yougurt is indicated.
Yougurt also has live bacteria. Good bacteria.

      hope this helps.

  16. QUESTION:
how long do you have to wait to have sex after taking monistat 7 for a yeast infection?
took it for seven days because i got a yeast infection from taking antibiotics for a sinus infection. last night was the last day, so im wondering when it is finally safe to have sex. symptoms are gone and everything. if i cant have sex for a while can we do other things (oral, touching with hands, etc.)??

    • ANSWER:
I'd give it a few more days before having sex, just to be 100% sure, just because the symptoms have gone, doesn't mean the infection has completely. Touching shouldn't be too much of a problem, however, make sure your partner washes his hands directly afterwards. I would avoid oral though because yeast infections can be spread orally.

  17. QUESTION:
Does oil or something similar accompany the urine while taking Monistat 3?
I have had a yeast infection due to taking antibiotics (which is normal for me) But, while taking the monistat I noticed that it looks like my urine has oil in it. I don't know if thats associated with the medicine or if I should be worried about my kidneys.
I haven't taken the antibiotics since about two weeks ago. I don't think its associated with the antibiotics. I did have frequent urination but the urine is not an alarming color. It seems normal to me.

    • ANSWER:
The medication is oil based. They have to mix the ingredients with something and they use a base that is made of oil. This is normal.

  18. QUESTION:
Does Threelac work for getting rid of a yeast infection - for a man?
I got a yeast infection from taking too many antibiotics as a teen. My main problem is a very itchy anus (sorry to say, but it's true). I have a hard time with the yeast free diet (I tried it once for 3 weeks and my symptoms returned). This 3lac product looks good. Comments? thank you.

    • ANSWER:

  19. QUESTION:
Is it safe to take over the counter acidophilus pills while on antibiotics?
I have been on antibiotics for a long time and now have a yeast infection from taking the antibiotics. I used Monistat for 2 nights and have one night left. I still have to take the antibiotics for another 4 days until my next doctor appt. Should I take the pills or wait until the antibiotics are done? I did eat some yogurt.

    • ANSWER:
yes it is. they are a great thing to take to help with the yeast infections. acidophilus is the same thing that is in yogurt. it is just in a higher dose. many doctors actual recommend it for women with yeast infections or reoccurring yeast infections.

  20. QUESTION:
How early do yeast infections come on when your body registers that it's pregnant?
I got a yeast infection out the clear blue. In the past, I've only gotten them after using antibiotics. This time, I was not taking antibiotics.

The only thing different that I have been doing lately is taking baths.

Now I am wondering if pregnancy is the cause of this yeast infection?

    • ANSWER:
Pregnancy can cause yeast infections due to the change of acidity of the vagina (so I've been told.) I had several with my first pregnancy and I'm eight weeks pregnant now and dealing with my first. Call your OB, they will take a swab to make sure there is no bacterial infection as well, and can start you on some safe medications. Good luck!

  21. QUESTION:
what is the best over the counter medicine for a yeast infection?
I have been taking antibiotics for an infection on my face and now i have a yeast infection I know there is medication over the counter to take care of this but which is the most effective?

    • ANSWER:
Personally I think the best OTC medication for a yeast infection is Monistat. Either the 3 or 5 day is the best, the 1 day doesn't always work the first time. I know this because I have a weak amune system and have been on antibiotics a lot and needed to treat yeast infections often. Monistat is your best bet in my eyes.

Good Luck and hope all works out well for you.

      P.S

If that does not work see your doctor, they can give you a pill that works wonders to get rid of yeast infections: but they would want to make sure its a yeast infection and not something else if you go to see them, but seeing as though you are on antibiotics I am pretty sure that you don't need to worry about it being anything other than an a yeast infection.

  22. QUESTION:
Is there any way to treat a yeast infection naturally?
I have a yeast infection from taking some antibiotics and i was wondering if there was any way to cure it without more antibiotics or vaginal suppositories?

    • ANSWER:
You should make sure it's a yeast infection first.

Easy At-Home Methods to Rebalance the Vaginal Ph

Insert unpasteurized, plain yogurt with a small spoon or spatula or vaginal cream applicator. Insert at night and wear a pad. Repeat for three to seven nights, until symptoms disappear. Douching with yogurt and water can help, too. It also helps to eat a lot of yogurt.

"Paint" the vagina, cervix (you'll need a speculum) and vulva (outside area including the labia or "lips" of vagina) with gentian violet. It stains so you'll want to wear a pad. This usually works after one treatment.
Insert a garlic suppository. Carefully peel one clove of garlic. Wrap in gauze and insert into the vagina. Leave in for up to twelve hours. Repeat as necessary. It also helps to eat a lot of garlic.

Drink cranberry juice. Unsweetened is best.

Insert Potassium Sorbate. This is used in home beer-making and can be found at wine-making stores. Dip a cotton tampon into a 3% solution (15 grams of Potassium Sorbate in one pint of water) and insert into the vagina at night. Remove in the morning.

Drink or eat Acidophilus. It's available in powder or capsules in health food stores or found in some milk and yogurt products. (Read the label; some dairy products have added acidophilus.)

Douche with a vinegar/water solution. One tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water, once a day. Especially effective when used with yogurt suppositories.

      Good Luck!

  23. QUESTION:
How can I prevent a yeast infection?

  25. QUESTION:
What are some antibiotics you can take that WONT cause a yeast infection?
Ive taken amoxicillin before and it gave me a yeast infection, is there an antibiotic that WONT cause a yeast infection, or when I do take a antibiotic can i take acidophiles with it at the same time?

    • ANSWER:
If you are prone to yeast infections, then there is no antibiotics that won't cause them.

What happens is antibiotics kill bacteria, and they don't discriminate against what parts of your body they will trigger. So the good bacteria in your vagina are killed along the bad ones that make you sick. Result: yeasts in the vagina, that were already there, now have the whole place for themselves and thrive.

Eating more probiotic foods like yogurt can help in reducing the effects, but while some women never get yeast infections when they are on antibiotics (I never have), others just always get them no matter the antibiotic (like my mother).

  26. QUESTION:

  27. QUESTION:
How long should it take for yeast infection to clear?
I took antibiotics and ended up with a nasty yeast infection. I went to the obgyn the next day to get diagnosed as well as get a treatment. She gave me the one pill fluconazole and after 4 days, the white, cottage cheese like discharge completely cleared away and the itching subsided a bit. I didn't scratch much during the infection but I did rub it rarely, when it got too itchy I would wash with cold water and a napkin. I started noticing little gashes around my vagina, the area between my vagina and my butt had looked like the skin ripped apart twice leaving two semi long type of cuts but those healed.
It's the end of the second week. My vagina looks clear but its light pink on some of the outter parts and close to my thighs as well as that middle area between my vagina and butt, there are tiny cuts that itch and it still itches every now and then around my clit. My question is, is this at all normal? My skin seems so sensitive down there and any friction causes these cuts and my skin seems a tad bit raw. And if this is normal for a yeast infection, then how long does it take for this to go away? is it because the infection is still not completely gone?

    • ANSWER:
It should take 7-10 days for a yeast infection to clear

  28. QUESTION:
How to prevent breastfed baby from getting my yeast infection?
I have mastitis (OWW) and have been taking antibiotics. I have been weary of a yeast infection and to my dismay, I developed one last night. Will my daughter get it from breastfeeding automatically? I don't know how that works? Is the infection in my whole body or just down there? Should I begin treating it even though I still have to take antibiotics? What do I do. I hope not to return to the ER bc I've been there all week. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If you are talking about thrush then make sure to:
      1. Sterilize everything that goes into baby's mouth. I had thrush before she was sticking everything in her mouth so that was easy. I used a microwave sterilizer.
      2. Wash bras in hot water and only use once
      3. After pumping or breastfeeding, rinse your breasts and let them air dry. If possible give them as much air as possible - I basically walked around topless all day.
      4. If your doctor will perscribe, ask for all purpose nipple ointment.
      5. I read in The Breastfeeding book of answers that probiotics help when you are taking antibiotics. I also took grapefruit seed pill

  29. QUESTION:
How long do antibiotics stay in the bloodstream?
Because I'm afraid that I might get a yeast infection, even though I finished my antibiotics earlier this week and haven't gotten one so far. I learned that a yeast infection can be delayed after taking antibiotics and, you know, I don't want to get one. So how long do you think it will be until I'm not at risk of getting one?

    • ANSWER:
Don't know anything about yeast infections, but antibiotics usually run their course in about 24 hours. That's why you usually have to take one every 24 hours, and sometimes (myself) had to take them every 8 hours. Once your regimen is over, the antibiotics usually clear right out of your system. They're supposed to kill bacteria and an onslaught (of antibiotics) for about ten days usually does the trick. Unless you have one of those supergerms where antibiotics lose their effectiveness.

  30. QUESTION:
Can doucing with water and apple cidar vinegar rid yeast infection?
I know doucing is not good and u shouldn't do it but one time will not kill me I have a yeast infection and I took an antibiotic and its still here. I went to the doctor that's where I got the antibiotic from. I just want to know if apple cidar vinegar and water will work?

    • ANSWER:
Yeast infections need the cream you can get over the counter. Antibiotics only cure bacteria infections... not an overabundance of yeast. Douching with vinegar will not kill the yeast! Just get the cream.

  31. QUESTION:
Will antibiotics make my yeast infection worse?
I treated a yeast infection three days ago but now need to take antibiotics. If I do will the yeast infection get worse? The symptoms are mostly gone.

    • ANSWER:
Since yeast infections are fungal (candida albicans), not bacterial, and our body's "friendly" bacteria tend to keep the yeast under control, I would say that a course of antibiotics will most likely make it worse.

  33. QUESTION:
Could my yeast infection and the combination of plan b and antibiotics make my period late?
I took Plan B after unprotected sex last month. Then I got my period a week later, found out I had a UTI and took antibiotics. Then I got a yeast infection and am currently on medication now. My period this month is now almost a week late. Could I be pregnant or could the combination of all the meds I took make my period late?
Ok... I'm just paranoid that maybe my period I got last month after taking plan b was just spotting.

    • ANSWER:
The period you are expecting now, is that counting from your original period due date or from the 'spotting' of taking Plan B. After taking Plan B (depending on where you were in your cycle) it may take awhile for your body to get back in sync with having your next period on time.

If you are concerned that you might be pregnant, take a test or see a doctor.

  36. QUESTION:
How likely is it that I will get a yeast infection while on antibiotics? How can I prevent this?
I have a bad case of strep throat. I got a perscription of antibiotics, plus 3 steroid pills I had to take all at once to make the swelling go down. I also am taking birth control pills. The doc says to take 3 antibiotic pills a day, morning, noon, and night. And they are kind of big pills. I'm really worried about getting a yeast infection. How likely is it that I will get one because of all these meds? What can I do to try and prevent this? Any tips?
By the way, I've never had a yeast infection before. That probably explains why I'm so nervous about getting one. My doc said that it is possible that I might get one because of all of my medications and if I do, to call and get Diflucan.

    • ANSWER:
Hi there. Well, really you should have asked the doctor if the antibiotic that she was giving you was one that was prone to causing a yeast infection. Some are much more likely to do that then others. Some doctors will just automatically give you something for a yeast infection so that you do not have to deal with it. If you do start showing signs of a yeast infection give this same doctor a phone call and tell her what is going on. There is a single pill that you can take that will take care of it.
I don't think that any of the home remedies really work as efficiently as the pill does. It will zap a yeast infection before it even really gets going.
BTW, did the doctor mention that you might want to use a back up form of birth control while you are taking these antibiotics if you are taking birth control pills? Condoms will do the job. There again some antibiotics are more prone to doing this than others, the doctor should certainly have warned you. Better to be safe than sorry though!
Good luck and I hope everything works out just fine.
      Blessings
      Lady Triniity~

  37. QUESTION:
Will my antibiotics cause a yeast infection ?
I'm currently taking antibiotics for my bladder infection and I was wondering if the medicine will cause a yeast infection. Now I'm asking this because on some forums I read that sometimes when you take antibiotics it can cause yeast infections. Any advice ?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, they can. Start eating lots of plain yogurt.

      Signs of yeast infections:
      White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
      Intense itching
      Buy Monistat 7 over-the-counter

      Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
      Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva
      See a doctor

  38. QUESTION:
What is causing my abnormal white discharge?
For about 3 months now, I've had a really thick, sticky, abundant white discharge. I thought it was the yeast infection I got from taking antibiotics about 3 months ago that just wouldn't go away, but I just got the results from my doctor for yeast infection and different STDs and they were all negative! Could my birth control pill be causing this? I've been on Marvelon 28 for almost 3 months now... Should I change pills or should it go away on its own when my body is used to this particular pill?

    • ANSWER:
Are you itching? If not, it's not a yeast infection. Yes, antibiotics can cause a yeast infection and so can birth control pills.

Different types of infections, which a girl can get at any time:

      Signs of yeast infections:
      White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
      Intense itching
      Buy Monistat 7 over-the-counter

      Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
      Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva
      See a doctor

      Different Types of Discharge:

White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is "fertile" mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: May happen right after periods, and is just "cleaning out" your vagina. Old blood looks brown. This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle.

Once you start puberty a white and/or clear wet mucus discharge is normal. In my day they just called it discharge, now they call it cervical mucus/leukorrhea. It's part of the female reproductive cycle. The vagina is self-cleaning. This same discharge increases the closer you get to ovulation and when you are sexually aroused. Trust me, you don't ever want it to go away. It is what makes sex possible. You will also have your own unique musky scent and it will smell stronger to you than to others. Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, illness, medication and even diet can effect your scent.

This normal discharge will also continue after you get your period, after puberty and for the rest of your life. Some girls do produce more discharge than others. You can wear a pantyliner if it bothers you. The amount and consistency can vary due to hormones, diet, water intake, exercise, illness and medication.

Your normal white/clear discharge will turn yellow or dry yellow when exposed to air. If it is coming out yellow, then you probably have a bacterial infection and need to see a doctor.

  39. QUESTION:
Is it ok for me to use Rephreash after treating a yeast infection?
Well I have recently treated a yeast infection but for the last past 2 days I have still been kinda dry & a little itchy. So I'm wondering if it will b ok 2 use the rephreash? Also when I can I have sex again? Bty..I got the infection from taking antibiotics & its my 1st one.

    • ANSWER:
Don't use RePhreash yet, and if you can, avoid it completely. These artificial PH-balancers and vaginal rejuvenators/refreshers take the place of your body's natural anti-inflmmatory system. They replace the naturally-occurring GOOD bacteria that is supposed to live in your vagina and keep things running freshly and smoothly. The easiest way to keep your natural defenses up is to eat a bit of yogurt every day, if possible. Even a small amount (half a yogurt cup) is enough for this purpose. Also of course drink enough water. There are more foods and methods provided at the site listed below.

If you are able to see a doctor about this issue, you can do a test (he/she will take a culture swab of your vaginal tissue) to see if you have some chronic problem which means you need to artificially balance your pH, but otherwise, stick to natural methods.

  40. QUESTION:
What can i take for my ear infection besides antibiotics?
Currently, I can't take antibiotics because I have a yeast infection right now. I've been having the yeast infection for 3 months already and I'm finally getting it tackled.

I do not want to take antibiotics, because of course antibiotics makes a yeast infection worst. I do not want to go through this again. But neither do I want an ear infection because those are very severe. Including I kind of have anxiety issues too so that kind of might trigger my ear infection a bit because stress or anxiety affects your immune system, but im working on it.

Sorry for too much writing but in short words do you guys know any home remedies or anything that isn't an antibiotic that can treat an ear infection? because its already going down my throat and the ear drops aren't effective

    • ANSWER:
I empathize with you, dealing with two competing medical problems simultaneously. I've been there (with different issues then yours, obviously).

There are some home remedies for outer ear infections, but if the drops are failing that means it's probably inner ear. You'll have to see a doctor, or doctors. Y!A won't do it here. Everything becomes very different when dealing with multiple infections.

Only a doctor can help you balance the pluses and minuses, and understand the risks of possible treatments. Some ear infections can lead to complete hearing loss, and so might be worth the antibiotics and misery. Perhaps an ear/nose/throat doctor has some way of getting the drops to where they're needed, or at least to clean out the ear.

Or (cross your fingers) you may find out the infection is trivial, which will alleviate both the dilemma and the stress.

      Best of luck with this.

  42. QUESTION:
How to prevent a yeast infection while taking antibiotics?
I just got some strong antibiotics for a really bad throat infection and the pharmacist told me that these antibiotics have the tendency of causing a yeast infection once the pills are done. I'm just wondering if there is a way to help prevent it from happening?

    • ANSWER:
Eat yogurt. The live cultures replace the good bacteria antibiotics have a tendency to kill off.

  43. QUESTION:
How can I prevent a yeast infection?
This is my 2nd time getting one and I'm 17. I took monistat 1 day already last night and ohmyfrigginggosh it burns and itches severely! Worst night of my life and I feel a lot better today, but how can I prevent yeast infections? I took a antibiotic not to long ago, so I think I'm prone to getting yeast infections from them and it seems I get them before my period as well because I'm supposed to start my period 3ish days ago , never did and yes I'm a virgin.

    • ANSWER:
When I was on the combined pill I used to get thrush all the time. I tried over the counter "canistan', which I then had a severe allergic reaction, with severe itching and stinging.

The best thing I ever did, was visiting a 'Naturopath', who prescribed me with a vitamin rich herbal drink (it was thick and brown and tasted vile), which I had to drink 3 times a day for a month, but it got rid of the thrush, also known as candida, and I haven't had an attack in over 20 odd years.

You could try avoiding eating or drinking anything with yeast in it, like breads, cakes and alcohol and eating plenty of organic life yogurt. In a bad attack, smear it over the affected area, at bed time and wear cotton against your skin, should relieve and treat it.

Stress can cause your periods to be a bit late, thrush has nothing to do with being a virgin, although if your sexual partner has thrush, it can be passed between the two of you.

  50. QUESTION:
How to heal a yeast infection naturally?
I have been fighting what I am guessing is a yeast infection for over a week now. It hasn't gotten extremely bad until today, I am not wanting to take an antibiotic because I am 34 weeks pregnant. Any suggestions or ideas for natural solution to clear this up?

    • ANSWER:
As well as treatments you also want to make sure you're not doing anything to make the infection worse. Normal vaginal health; wash regularly but only with water (soaps, washes, wipes, sprays, powders, douching, or even 'feminine' cleaning products all effect vaginal pH so cause infections), keep yourself dry (avoid tight or synthetic clothing), safe sex (anything that goes into your vagina should be clean, no food stuffs), and always wipe front to back.

Yogurt is the best known way, it contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that also happens to be found in healthy vaginas and that kills yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide. You need to insert plain pro-biotic yogurt into your vagina, do this before bed to avoid mess then wash in the morning, do this for a few days to get rid of the infection. You can put the yogurt into ice cube trays to make it easier to insert, the cultures don't survive as well but this way is less mess and the coolness helps ease the irritation.

Garlic, not recommended if you're sexually active, but it works as it contains natural antifungal substances that kill off yeast. You insert a garlic clove into your vagina, peel beforehand but do not score the clove in anyway as this can sting your vagina, if worried about removal you can use a little clean muslin around it or tie string around it for easy removal.

Tea tree oil *check with your doctor!* essential oils tend to be a bit of a grey area when it comes to pregnancy, better to be safe then sorry. It's a generall all-round anti-nasties, if you have a menstrual cup, softcups or a diaphragm you can put a few drops of the oil into these then insert into your vagina, ideally dilute with water but it is safe to use neat. Otherwise you can use an old jug, fill with warm water and put a few drops of the oil into the water, then use the water to wash over your vulva, best to do this in the shower or over the toilet to avoid water getting everywhere. If you can handle it you can just put a few drops directly onto your vulva and into your vagina, but it can sting.

Cranberry juice, these are used when you have a urinary infection as the berries contain substances that inhibit bacteria from clinging to the walls of your urinary tract, but they are also a plus because cranberries lower the pH of your urine, which then passes over some of your vulva on it's way out so may help tackle a yeast infection or at least ease symptoms a little.
