postheadericon Yogurt With Antibiotics Yeast Infection

Although it is not the cure for the common cold, many people certainly hail the benefits of this remedy as being heaven sent. As a relief from the burning, itching, rash, and vaginal discharge, yogurt yeast infections remedies are the number one thing on many people's minds. It can be messy, it can drip, and it can feel downright silly and maybe even naughty to be doing this, but to the tens of thousands of yeast infections sufferers yogurt it is the one thing that can stop them from going over the edge. There are of course other remedies that will work on yeast infections, and raw garlic clove suppositories is one of them, but most people will first try their hand at one of the methods of the yogurt yeast infections cure. As was mentioned it can prove to be a messy business, so if you are a woman suffering from a yeast infection then you might want to think about wearing a pad to ward off incipient messiness. For a man suffering from yeast infections the best advice that comes to mind is to try this remedy when you are at home, and where it will not be commented upon if you have a large wet patch on the front of your trousers! The first choice of many sufferers using the yogurt yeast infections remedy is to go it direct. This entails you applying the unsweetened yogurt to the infected area. For a man, lather your penis lavishly with yogurt, and for a woman, you need to coat the vaginal walls with the yogurt. This yogurt yeast infections remedy can be done in many ways. The first of which is to use a plastic speculum to open the vagina whereupon you can coat the vaginal walls. Another method is to use a tampon. All you need to do is to coat a tampon in the unsweetened yogurt and insert into the vagina. This takes care of the whole situation most effectively. You also have the option of freezing yogurt in disposable gloves, thereby creating yogurt fingers or frozen yogurt tampons. The first time that you insert one of these frozen yogurt yeast infections remedies into your vagina, it is admittedly a bit of a shock, but on the whole it is very soothing. Of course if these messy methods of yogurt yeast infections remedies do not appeal to you, you can always just do away with it and have your yogurt in pill form. These come in the guise of lactobacillus acidophilus tablets as this is the main ingredient in the yogurt yeast infections cure which helps to fight against yeast producing bacteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Are there any natural ways to get rid of a yeast infection?
I'm allergic to the prescription and over the counter treatments... My dr recommended I eat probiotic yogurt or said that antibiotics could work. Well, antibiotics can cause yeast infections... So, are there any natural ways to get rid of one?

    • ANSWER:
A study reviewed in JOGNN showed that applying yogurt directly to the vagina (about one tablespoon via an applicator) can also fight yeast infections.
"A vaginal application of yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus may help to prevent and treat candidal vaginitis (a.k.a. yeast infections)."

  2. QUESTION:
How does yogurt help a yeast infection?
I'm currently taking an antibiotic for a sinus infection and my doctor said that yeast infection is a side affect and told me to eat yogurt. How does this help?
Is Chobani Greek Yogurt alright to eat/use?

    • ANSWER:
Yogurt contains live bacteria (but you should look for a container that says "live active cultures"). those bacteria are good bacteria that help you with your digestion and they live in your digestive system. Everyone has them. Antibiotics kill the bad bacteria causing your infection, but they also kill the good bacteria that help with digestion and eat the yeast that naturally lives in your vaginal area. This means that the yeast grows quickly and you get a yeast infection. So if you eat yogurt, you will be able to replace the good bacteria that has been killed. That will hopefully prevent a yeast infection. You could also get acidophilus tablets from any health food store or supermarket in the vitamin section.

  3. QUESTION:
What to do about a mild yeast infection?
I was recently put on a strong antibiotic for an extended period of time, and I noticed right around the end of my use that I had some strange vaginal discharge. I researched it and found out that antibiotics can cause yeast infections.
I only had one day of the thick white discharge, and there was no smell. There is very, very little itching/burning, and when it is present, it's extremely tolerable. My question is whether I should let this continue to clear up on it's own (it's been maybe four days), and if so, what types of things should I do to help the process along? For example, I read that it's good to eat yogurt.
I am not sexually active, so I can not possibly have an STD.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Caitlin

it is never a good idea to let it clear on its own. So my advice would be to take action and do something about it, before it gets worse.

Best thing to do is to go see a doctor about it, and tell her/him your symptoms.

But, I never liked doctors, and I usually try to cure things naturally. Yes, yogurt can help a lot, so definitely start eating one yogurt a day. It is best to use a plain, unheated, low-fat yogurt. Make sure it doesn t contain any additives, sugar, fruits or any flavors in it.

You can use yogurt to spread it down there, around the affected area and on it as well. You will feel a great cooling effect, and the itch will be gone fast.

Same with honey (organic one). Apply it to infected area, and it will help relieve the symptoms.

Also, Garlic is very helpful for treating yeast infections.

Try to stay away from red meat for a few days as well. Sugar is a big no no also, so try not to eat foods high in sugar (candy bars, cookies, things like that)

      Good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
How do I prevent a yeast infection while on antibiotics?
I just started taking Amoxicillin for a minor infection - twice a day for ten days.

I've never gotten a yeast infection from antibiotics before and I don't know how likely it is that I'll get one this time.

Is there anything I can do to prevent it? I know plain white yogurt helps. Should I do that before or during my antibiotic course? Any other advice? Thanks.
I should have clarified. I have an ear infection.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, my doctor always told me to eat yogurt when I was taking antibiotics. It helps to restore the good bacteria in your digestive system. Take 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take the antibiotic.

  5. QUESTION:
How log does it take for yogurt to help a yeast infection?
I believe I have a yeast infection. I am always on an antibiotic minocycline for acne, would that help if it was bacterial? I just got yogurt and I was wondering how much I should eat and how long it takes to help

    • ANSWER:
      Many antibiotics cause yeast infections.

From Web MD about yeast infections and Minocycline:
Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms.

Home treatment yeast infection. You can buy the Monistat products or like. I never use those. Make sure the yogurt you got is plain. It cannot have fruit or sugar or vanilla. Sugar makes yeast multiply avoid sugar and sugary drinks. I have never used yogurt alone so I am not sure how long that would take. Go buy some Acidophillus 3 billion organisms. Like this but you can get different brands and is n any grocery store, pharmacy, walmart etc. Some say put in fridge so read that. When I have a yeast infection I take 2 Acidophillus a day and I buy 2 big tubs of plain yogurt. I eat 3 big bites twice a day of the yogurt. It tastes bad but contains the same Acidophillus and that is the healthy bacteria you need inyour vagina for balance. For the itching buy Vagisil for the outside maximum strength a few times a day whenever it acts up.

I work at a hospital and I heard a doctor say when to a patient if you take antibiotics to put a fingerful of the yogurt inside you daily. I also had read this online that you can take a tampon out of the applicator and cover it with yogurt and insert it in you for a few hours. Also it can cool the outside if you do not have Vagisil.

It usually will go away within a week usually 5 days the way I do it, Yogurt and Acidophillus.

  6. QUESTION:
How to cure atopic dermatitis and yeast infections in dogs?
I have a small shichi (Shih-Tzu and chihuahua mix). I have taken her to countless vets and found out she has atopic dermatitis and a severe case of yeast infection inside and on her body. She is on antibiotics and Benadryl for dogs but doesn't seem to be getting any better. I've tried using yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and colloidal silver remedies but nothing seems to work. I really would love some ideas of what else I could do for her. Preferably natural remedies. I hate seeing my baby itch like crazy. :(
I have tried to change her food up by giving her just hamburger for awhile but nothing changed. But I would def be willing to try again to see if it would help. No, I haven't tried the coal tar shampoo. She has some open sores on her body from itching so much. Would that hurt her and would it help take the yeast away? I have some medicated shampoo from the vet to take the yeast away but it can be so harsh that her paws bleed when I give her a bath which I really dislike. Her vet says she's a poster child for skin problems. :(

    • ANSWER:
my last dog had severe environmental and food allergies resulting in excessive scratching, traumatizing the skin, and yeast infections ... NOTHING the vet told me helped, not even the doggie allergy specialist i spent tons on to see, none helped my dog ... i finally switched her to a grain-free limited ingredient diet (natural balance, the salmon one) and started adding raw organic apple cider vinegar to her kibble every morning ... she stopped itching and messing with her skin and she never had another yeast infection (skin or ear) for the rest of her life ...

  7. QUESTION:
When I am done taking my antibiotics will my yeast infection go away on its own?
I just got put on antibiotics a couple days ago and now i randomly have a yeast infection. Will the infection go away on its own once i'm done with the antibiotics? How long will it be?
I think the antibiotics are what caused it.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, the antibiotics are what caused the yeast infection. No, the yeast infection will not go away on it's own after you stop taking them.

      Try these:

*Take Lots of acidophilus/probiotics or eat Unsweetened Yogurt
*Avoid tight jeans and other tight trousers
*Wear cotton underwear during the day
      *Wear no underwear to bed

Here's some things to try. I've tired the first two and know they work:

      1. Put a tsp of apple cider vinegar in a 6-8 ounce glass of water and drink it 2-3 times a day.

      2. Mix a tsp of Hydrogen Peroxide in a cup of water and pour over the area.

      3. Fill a bathtub with just enough warm, not hot, water to create a sitz bath (enough water to cover your groin and just up to your belly). Add 2 cups of raw apple cider vinegar and sit in the bath with your knees folded toward your body (not stretched out flat). You can stay in this bath mixture for 15 minutes. Gently pat dry and make sure you are very dry before putting any clothes on. Wear only cotton underpants, preferably washed in natural unscented detergent.

  8. QUESTION:
how do I naturally treat a yeast infection?
I almost positive i have a yeast infection, but i want to treat it naturally. I heard that using yogurt will help, any other suggestions? Would antibiotic cream work?

    • ANSWER:
Don't use antibiotic cream - it can make a yeast infection worse! Yeast infections are caused by a fungus. Antibiotic creams only work against bacteria. There are actually some kinds of "good" bacteria living in your vagina that help keep the yeast fungus under control. In fact, the last time I had a yeast infection, it developed because I was taking antibiotics for another problem and as a side effect, it killed off the good bacteria.

Yogurt is a good natural remedy (but not any old yogurt - you have to specifically look for one that contains active cultures). I've also heard that fresh, uncooked garlic can help (use it like a tampon), as can teatree oil.

As for me, I've always just used monistat.

  9. QUESTION:
What are some antibiotics you can take that WONT cause a yeast infection?
Ive taken amoxicillin before and it gave me a yeast infection, is there an antibiotic that WONT cause a yeast infection, or when I do take a antibiotic can i take acidophiles with it at the same time?

    • ANSWER:
If you are prone to yeast infections, then there is no antibiotics that won't cause them.

What happens is antibiotics kill bacteria, and they don't discriminate against what parts of your body they will trigger. So the good bacteria in your vagina are killed along the bad ones that make you sick. Result: yeasts in the vagina, that were already there, now have the whole place for themselves and thrive.

Eating more probiotic foods like yogurt can help in reducing the effects, but while some women never get yeast infections when they are on antibiotics (I never have), others just always get them no matter the antibiotic (like my mother).

  10. QUESTION:
Best yogurt to eat while yeast infection?
My doctor prescribed me some antibiotics for my yeast infection already, but he also told me to eat yogurt daily so it will help. Which brand of yogurt is best for this? Also not a lot of fat or sugars, I'm on a diet :) . Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Activia! Jamie Lee Curtis uses it

  11. QUESTION:
Will my antibiotics cause a yeast infection ?
I'm currently taking antibiotics for my bladder infection and I was wondering if the medicine will cause a yeast infection. Now I'm asking this because on some forums I read that sometimes when you take antibiotics it can cause yeast infections. Any advice ?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, they can. Start eating lots of plain yogurt.

      Signs of yeast infections:
      White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
      Intense itching
      Buy Monistat 7 over-the-counter

      Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
      Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva
      See a doctor

  12. QUESTION:
Can i mix monistat 3 with Plain yogurt for my yeast infection?
I have a yeast infection and it's almost gone but i was wondering if it would be more effective to mix yogurt and the monistat suppository. I have also been taking 1000 mg of Oderless Garlic and have eaten some yogurt. I have been watching what i eat and have been drinking lots of water.
It's not to eat -_- it's to put up there! Yogurt is okay to use inside your vagina for yeast infections and so is monistat so my question was can i mix them, NOT TO EAT THEM.

    • ANSWER:
      Yes you absolutely can.

Here is what you should do: use the medication at night, apply yogurt down there for a couple hours sometime during the day. I wouldn't put them both at the same time (I don't know why but my MIL is a nurse and said not to)~ do it separately.

Be sure the yogurt is Plain and not flavored.
Also, It would also help you to eat some of the yogurt and even take acidophilus which has the same stuff yogurt does. (if you are on antibiotics and that is why you got the yeast infection then wait to take the acidophilus until you are done with the antibiotics, taking them together will lessen the effects of antibiotics.)

  13. QUESTION:
How to cure a yeast infection?
I have overactive yeast and I just recently got off of an antibiotic and I have a yeast infection. I have tried everything from diflucan to Monistat7. Ive ate yogurt and rubbed it on there. I have drank buttermilk and took a bath in it. Nothing has helped. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
As well as trying all the usual stuff like the diflucan and yoghurt etc...have you tried changing your diet? That's what a friend of mine had to do when she had the same problem as you. She left out as much dairy as possible and had to stop eating most fruit because the candida thrives on the sugar from it. Have a look at the site in the source box for a list of foods best avoided if you're having recurring 'yeast' issues. It's really quite interesting and hopefully it'll be helpful for you too!

Here's a sample of what's on the site:

The yeast infection diet calls for NO Fruits and fruit juices because of the sugar they contain except for:
Green apples, berries, avocadoes, grapefruit, lemons, limes.

NO Breaded Meats...All others ok .

NO Egg substitutes...Eggs themselves are ok...organic is best since they contain the correct omega fatty acids ratio...with fertile if you can find them being the ideal.

      NO Margarine and butter substitutes.

On the yeast infection diet, yogurt (especially made from goats or organic), cream cheese, sour cream made from real cream, unsweetened whipping cream, and butter are all ok.

NO Potatoes and legumes on the yeast infection diet due to the high sugar starch content when digested (includes beans and peas).

Fresh vegetables and freshly made vegetable juice ok.

NO Coffee or tea (regular or decaf), NO Diet or regular sodas, Organic coffee or tea if you must in moderation.

These are known foods which usually contain fungi in one form or another and when digested break down into simple sugars, which yeast, feeds on. There are also over 400 known fungi that can affect the health of the human body, so it is best to not introduce any of these other fungi into your body when fighting candida or yeast, give yourself the best chance you can.

(One more handy tip I've learned is to iron your undies because the washing machine doesn't get rid of the yeast spores.)

  14. QUESTION:
How can eating yogurt with active cultures prevent a yeast infection?
Women often get yeast infections after taking antibiotics, because the drug kills off the natural bacteria and yeast takes over. I've heard that eating yogurt with active cultures can help replace the natural bacteria. But...how are those bacteria supposed to get from the digestive tract to the reproductive tract? Or does the yogurt only benefit the gut and does nothing to prevent yeast infections?

I doubt it could be through the bloodstream, because any bacteria in the blood is a serious medical condition. If it's across the skin, it would seem you'd have a hygiene problem.
I don't know who's right, so I'll put it up for a vote.

    • ANSWER:
I actually got better results from eating the yogurt and even when taking actual acidophillous tablets. When you take either of these it goes thru the blood system and in to the digestive tract to help restore the balance of good bacteria there.

Taking acidophillous will help prevent yeast infections. I did it for some time taking the acidophillous tablets and it worked pretty well for me.

I would recommend checking with your dr to be on the safe side.

  15. QUESTION:
Is it ok to treat a yeast infection while still using antibiotics?
I have 3 more days to use the rest of my 7 days worth of antibiotics, and it has already caused a yeast infection. It is bugging the crap outa me, and I wanna get rid of it pronto! Is it ok to begin treatment, or should I wait until I finish the rest of the antibiotics?

    • ANSWER:
if you have yeast infection then you must get rid of it as soon as it is possible!!!

if you really want to get rid of yeast infection forever then you must follow these tips:

      1) Eat yogurt!!!! It contains helpful bacteria (live cultures, including acidophilus and bifidus) that destroy yeast. Use only plain yogurt with active cultures.

      2) Douche with a solution of 1 to 3 tbsp. vinegar in a quart of water. Repeat once a day while having symptoms, but no longer than a week.

      3) Decrease or eliminate sugar and sugary foods. Sugar promotes yeast growth.

      4) Use a garlic clove as a suppository. Garlic contains a natural anti-fungal agent.

      5) Try gentian violet. It's a traditional remedy for yeast and other infections, and can be found in pharmacies. Swab the area with it once or twice a day. Make sure to use a thick pad - it stains everything.

      6) Use an herbal douche. Combine equal amounts of sage, raspberry and comfrey with 1/4 part goldenseal. This can be combined with cider vinegar.

      7) You must use herbal treatment. In that case Yeastrol is really good (probably the best) product that gets rid of yeast infection comparatively fast and makes you feel more confident knowing that it wont reappear again!
And of course it is better if you use full course (5 months - if I remember correctly). For me it worked very fast + I dont get yeast infections anymore...

I do not know if any pharmacies carry Yeastrol but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here http://www.yeastrol.com/?aid=221781

      good luck!

  16. QUESTION:
How to avoid a yeast infection while taking antibiotics?
I am currently taking the antibiotic Cephalexin. My doctor said it is likely that I will get a yeast infection while taking it. Is there any way to avoid getting a yeast infection?

    • ANSWER:
Actually, antibiotics often cause yeast infections. The reason you get a yeast infection after using antibiotics is because antibiotics kill all bacteria in the body, both the bacteria (the ones that you took antibiotics to get rid of) and the good bacteria (the ones that help your body fight off yeast infections). As a result the yeast is left to grow without any good bacteria to ward it off. Many people take OTC creams like monistat to treat the yeast infection, but often times that only temporarily fix the problem. More often than not you'll just end up with a reoccuring yeast infection. The best way to stop it permanently is to re-establish your body's balance of good bacteria and yeast.

Personally I think the best approach is the natural way. Basically the reason you have a yeast infection is because there's an imbalance in your body. A healthy person has a balance between the yeast in their body and the good bacteria in their body.

Too much yeast, you have a yeast infection. Too much bacteria, you have a bacterial infection.

So, when you have a yeast infection you essentially have too much yeast in your body. The natural way to treat it and bring back that balance is to starve the yeast and introduce more good bacteria into your body.

Oh and BTW - That's why you often get relief from using the over the counter meds temporarily, and then the yeast infection comes back. The creams aren't changing the source of the problem. They are just killing the yeast they come in contact with, and not balancing the yeast/bacteria in your body and actually sometimes end up making things a lot worse.

Oh BTW2 - That's also why many times you'll get a yeast infection after using antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria in your body, the good and the bad. When that happens the balance between the yeast and good bacteria is off once again and you get a yeast infection.

Things you can add to your diet (to help promote good bacteria) are live yogurt cultures (or take Acidophilus), plenty of water, fresh vegetables, lots of protein rich foods, whey protein, raw garlic, nuts, seeds, oils, millet, rice and oat brans.

Things you should remove from your diet (to starve the yeast) are all sodas, sugars, fruit, fermented foods, foods containing white flour, alcohol (especially beer), antacids and any product that has yeast or mold.

You can change your diet in conjunction with using the creams that you've been using and that will speed up the recovery significantly. But what I would also recommend is to use a homeopathic solution instead. I always feel if there's a natural way to do something, then it's best to avoid the chemicals. I would look for an natural product, that can be taken orally to promote re-growth of the good bacteria in your body.

There are a few out there, I think they are probably all pretty good. One that I have used and was very effective for me was is yeastrol.

If you're interesting in finding out more I've added a link that has some more info.

  17. QUESTION:
How many days after taking new antibiotics does a vaginal yeast infection appear?
I'm on Augmeten after being sick for a while. I've never been on this medication before. Three days ago I was prescribed. Two days later i realized I had a vaginal yeast infection. Is it normal to get it after only been taking the medication for a few days? I took 4 pills total and haven't eaten any yogurt or anything to prevent this from happening. HELP. Can this be something else?

    • ANSWER:
Vaginal yeast infection is highly infective and recurring in nature, instead of taking pills i suggest you to use natural and home based remedies along with maintaining proper hygiene.

  18. QUESTION:
Can antibiotics cause a yeast infection in a dog?
Similar to how women can get a yeast infection after finishing a dose of antibiotics could my dog have developed a yeast infection in his ear because of the antibiotics?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well as the bad and allow the yeast to flourish.

If your dog is on antibiotics you should be at least giving him some yogurt.

  19. QUESTION:
Can eating yogurt prevent a yeast infection?
I am about to start taking Flagyl for a vaginal infection. From what I understand, this medicine causes yeast infections. Will eating yogurt prevent me getting a yeast infection and how much yogurt should I consume to prevent one?

    • ANSWER:
It can help. Yogurt has natural live bacteria. Antibiotics kill good bacteria as well as bad, so it helps to replace the good (to keep things in balance). Just one a day is usually good for basic maintenance, but you may want to have a second while you are taking the meds (just to be safe). You can also buy acidophilus tabs. That is the active bacteria in yogurt. It is more expensive, though.

  20. QUESTION:
How to prevent yeast infection when on antibiotics?
Every time I am prescribed any anti-biotic, I get a yeast infection. Can a doctor prescribe something to fight off the yeast in advance or is there a reliable way to prevent it with home remedy or diet?

    • ANSWER:
First off....CRANBERRY JUICE IS FOR URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS, NOT YEAST INFECTIONS!
Now that I got that off my chest let me move on.....
I too am a sufferer of yeast infections while on antibiotics, it is really a pain BUT, here are a few tips to avoid or deal with them!
1.) Take acidophiles while on the antibiotic. Yogurt does NOT have enough alone to fight off the yeast from antibiotics. you'd have to eat a yogurt factory to actually help. Eating 1 container a day is only good for ibs (irritable bowel syndrom)
I eat yogurt every day and still get yeast infections while on certain medications so, I would not suggest that as a cure for your problem, You need more than what these people are suggesting!
Get the acidophiles that you store in the frig, from GNC with Live cultures, Take 2 in the morning and 2 before bed.
2.) Explain to your doctor that you get yeast infections and ask for a pill Diflucan, that fights yeast while on this.
3.) Get a couple boxes of monistat while on this.

I know yeast infections are annoying while taking other antibiotics but, I have learned how to deal with them by the 3 above choices.
      Good Luck and happy healing!

  21. QUESTION:
How can I avoid a yeast infection while I'm taking antibiotics, and steroids.?
I have to take antibiotics, and steroids for 2 months for a sinus infection. I already have a yeast infection and have taken the medicine. It seems to be coming back, I am wondering what I can do to avoid this.

    • ANSWER:
Ahhh, hey tami b, so antibiotics (especially taken for that long) can lead to recurring yeast infections because the antibiotics kill the bad guys but also the GOOD guys.

That's why everyone says eat yogurt. Don't just eat yogurt-- get probiotic supplements to fight back with the good guys!

Even yeast infection medicine can do this. When that happens, the yeast that causes yeast infection can adapt to the antibiotics and keep coming back!!

That's a really crappy place to be in-- I've had recurring yeast infections for that very reason-- I was on a long course of antiobiotics for a sinus infection!!!

Now, what can you do to avoid it? Trust me when I say it takes a little bit of effort.. go ahead and start to take probiotic supplements like I suggested earlier. Also try to eat a balanced diet-- you have to treat the root cause, not just the symptoms! Which is exactly what antibiotics do NOT do. There are AWESOME cures on this blog I have (I put it in the sources) that literally saved me from recurring yeast infections I had for a lonnnnng time. Visit the blog and do what she says.

  22. QUESTION:
How to prevent a yeast infection while taking antibiotics?
I just got some strong antibiotics for a really bad throat infection and the pharmacist told me that these antibiotics have the tendency of causing a yeast infection once the pills are done. I'm just wondering if there is a way to help prevent it from happening?

    • ANSWER:
Eat yogurt. The live cultures replace the good bacteria antibiotics have a tendency to kill off.

  23. QUESTION:
Yeast infection; what can my boyfriend and me do sexually?
I am on several antibiotics because I have been sick with a virus and I think the medications are giving me a yeast infection. What are some home remedies I can do to help? What can my boyfriend and me do sexually that is safe for the both us because I don't want to pass it to him and I don't want to make things worse for myself! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yogurt is effective against yeast infection as it contains high amount of acidophilus. This is known as good bacteria, which is responsible for destroying bacterial and fungal infections that starts to develop in the body. However, you should know that using yogurt as a yeast infection natural treatment has rules as well. It is necessary to opt for a pure yogurt as cure for the condition. It should not contain sugar and must not be processed.

Yogurt can be used both internally and externally. Consuming yogurt can help relieve yeast infection symptoms in women and men, and speed up the healing process of the infection.

You can also apply yogurt directly to the affected area. This may seem a bit messy but you can easily pull through with it, especially if it is against this very discomforting condition. You can use your fingers and apply the yogurt directly to the area affected by the infection or you can use it by dipping a tampon into it and inserting in into the vagina. Since yogurt is all natural, you can use it against the condition on a daily basis. It does not come with any side effects and is proven very effective against yeast infection. However, if the condition is severe, you might need to consume medications to relieve its symptoms.

Yeast infections are due to the excessive amount of yeast in the body and experts believe that it cannot be transmitted from one person to another. Oral thrush or oral candidiasis, on the other hand, can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. That means healthy men who had sexual intercourse with infected women can acquire the infection.

  24. QUESTION:
Can being on antibiotics cause a yeast infection?
I'm taking probiotics twice a day but wonder if the meds could still have caused a yeast infection.

    • ANSWER:
Yes some antibiotics can cause a yeast infection eat some yogurt.

  25. QUESTION:
How can I prevent yeast infections?
I've gotten yeast infections consistently since the beginning of my pregnancy. My doctor keeps giving me antibiotics but the yeast infections return. What else can I do besides eating yogurt and wearing lose clothes?

    • ANSWER:
Is he giving you antibiotics or antifungals? There's a difference. Antibiotics can CAUSE yeast infections, antifungals are what treat it.

It's obviously hormone related. It might settle down in the coming trimesters. Make sure your doctor gives you flucanozole for the infections if it's safe to be taken during pregnancy. I'm pretty sure it is but I could be wrong.

Make sure you wear cotton panties, instead of any synthetic materials, in addition to wearing loose clothes.

The kind of yogurt you eat can make a difference - Biobest and Activia are the ones clinically proven to have sufficient amounts of the good flora the body needs.

You can also try taking probiotic supplements.

  26. QUESTION:
How to heal a yeast infection naturally?
I have been fighting what I am guessing is a yeast infection for over a week now. It hasn't gotten extremely bad until today, I am not wanting to take an antibiotic because I am 34 weeks pregnant. Any suggestions or ideas for natural solution to clear this up?

    • ANSWER:
As well as treatments you also want to make sure you're not doing anything to make the infection worse. Normal vaginal health; wash regularly but only with water (soaps, washes, wipes, sprays, powders, douching, or even 'feminine' cleaning products all effect vaginal pH so cause infections), keep yourself dry (avoid tight or synthetic clothing), safe sex (anything that goes into your vagina should be clean, no food stuffs), and always wipe front to back.

Yogurt is the best known way, it contains lactobacillus acidophilus, a bacterium that also happens to be found in healthy vaginas and that kills yeast by producing hydrogen peroxide. You need to insert plain pro-biotic yogurt into your vagina, do this before bed to avoid mess then wash in the morning, do this for a few days to get rid of the infection. You can put the yogurt into ice cube trays to make it easier to insert, the cultures don't survive as well but this way is less mess and the coolness helps ease the irritation.

Garlic, not recommended if you're sexually active, but it works as it contains natural antifungal substances that kill off yeast. You insert a garlic clove into your vagina, peel beforehand but do not score the clove in anyway as this can sting your vagina, if worried about removal you can use a little clean muslin around it or tie string around it for easy removal.

Tea tree oil *check with your doctor!* essential oils tend to be a bit of a grey area when it comes to pregnancy, better to be safe then sorry. It's a generall all-round anti-nasties, if you have a menstrual cup, softcups or a diaphragm you can put a few drops of the oil into these then insert into your vagina, ideally dilute with water but it is safe to use neat. Otherwise you can use an old jug, fill with warm water and put a few drops of the oil into the water, then use the water to wash over your vulva, best to do this in the shower or over the toilet to avoid water getting everywhere. If you can handle it you can just put a few drops directly onto your vulva and into your vagina, but it can sting.

Cranberry juice, these are used when you have a urinary infection as the berries contain substances that inhibit bacteria from clinging to the walls of your urinary tract, but they are also a plus because cranberries lower the pH of your urine, which then passes over some of your vulva on it's way out so may help tackle a yeast infection or at least ease symptoms a little.

  27. QUESTION:
What are some foods that can help prevent yeast infections?
Right now I am on an antibiotic, so I'm worried about increasing my susceptibility to yeast infections (especially because I will be on this medicine for a long time). I've heard that yogurt is great for preventing infections, but I really hate yogurt. Are there other foods that work like this?

    • ANSWER:
They have something called "probiotics" that are in pill form which you can buy at your local drug store. I hate yogurt too and when I was on antibiotics for over 6 months my doctor recommended I take this.

  28. QUESTION:
How can I prevent a yeast infections when on antibiotics?
I have been put on Ciprofloxacin for a Urinary Tract Infection. Whenever I am put on an antibiotic I seem to end up with a yeast infection. I'm also taking Acidophilus Probiotic Blend 3 times a day any other ideas to help me from getting one???

    • ANSWER:
Try using natural LIVE yogurt. This needs to be introduced into the vagina with a tampon or syringe(minus the needle!)

The key is not the yogurt itself but the bacteria, lactobacillus acidophilus, in the yogurt. This helps the body maintain, or regain, its natural pH level and keeps yeast under control.

  29. QUESTION:
How can I prevent a yeast infection?

  31. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of a recurring yeast infection?
I am 16. I've had this problem for a whole now. When I go to my doctor she says to use the OTC monistat and other treatments for yeast infections. The problem is these treatments only give me temporary relief. Yes I have the symptoms of my vag being itchy, giving me an uncomfortable feeling, thick cottage cheese discharge. I have little white discharges left in my panties after every freaking day. It's getting so annoying and to points where I don't even want to have a vagina anymore. I've tried eating more yogurt, didn't help much. I shower everyday, wash my vagina every day, make sure it's squeaky clean. But I just stay so hot during the day and my vagina is always and I mean ALWAYS wet. I don't know how to get this to stop. My mom said it might be because i was on birth control and an antibiotic for acne. So I stopped using the acne medication, but the problem is still there. Just please help me!

    • ANSWER:

  32. QUESTION:
Will my yeast infection go away while taking my acne antibiotics?
I'm supposed to be on antibiotics for acne for along time, just started taking them a week ago and have gotten a yeast infection. I took a fluconazole pill will I continue to get a yeast infection while I take my antibiotics? Should I stop taking them?

  33. QUESTION:
What is good for clearing up yeast infections OTHER than yogurt?
I've always been told that yogurt has been good for clearing up yeast infections, but I'm not big on yogurt. In the case that I do ever get one, I was wondering what other foods or drinks might be helpful in clearing them up.

    • ANSWER:
You can definitely try using plain yogurt vaginally, just make sure it contains live bacterial culture. You could also try taking capsules of acidophilus orally - they will have a much higher count of the friendly bacteria. Cut down on any sugars. Caprylic acid, garlic, grapefuit seed extract & oregano oil can all be helpful as well. Wear cotton undies. Do a little research on the above. Just remember if you take any antibiotic it kills ALL the bacteria - good & bad, so you will want to replace it by eating yogurt or taking acidophilus pills.

  34. QUESTION:
Anything to help prevent a yeast infection from an antibiotic?
Last year, I was put on an antibiotic & I got a yeast infection. Now yesterday my doctor prescribed me amoxicillin and I'm worried about another yeast infection, because that is something i realllllly rather avoid. So, are there any way to help prevent getting a yeast infection from an antibiotic? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Yes! Probiotics. If you like yogurt, eat lots and lots of it, particularly after you have completed the course of antibiotics. Though the antibiotics are killing the bacteria they are supposed to kill, they are also killing the good bacteria that resides in your stomach and vagina. When the good bacteria dies, it is much easier for yeast to take over.

If you don't like yogurt, or just don't want to eat that much of it, go to your pharmacy and ask if they have Lactobacillus. It usually comes in little pills or granules (you can put the granules in cold food). It is the same stuff that is in yogurt, and it is fine for lactose intolerant people to take. You have to keep it in the refrigerator though.

Start this now and continue it for a few days after you are finished with the antibiotics and hopefully you will be ok. Also, remember to wear cotton underwear. Synthetic fabrics don't allow air flow and make a perfect environment for the yeast to grow. That is pretty much all you can do. Good luck!

  35. QUESTION:
Yeast infection and antibiotics does it matter which Monistati take?
I'm on an antibiotic and got a yeast infection. Does it matter which Monstat i get? Meaning If i have 7 days of antibiotics left if i get the three day monistat will the infection come back?

    • ANSWER:
For the future when taken antibiotics, you should eat plenty of unsweetened yogurt to avoid getting yeast infection. recurring candidiasis is caused mainly by antibiotics treatment. As asking to your question, Monistat or other treatment work best if taken longer time, hence seven days. However, they work just until next month or until something else trigger your yeast infection.

  36. QUESTION:
Can vaginal yeast infections spread to the anus?
I have a vaginal yeast infection from taking antibiotics and am starting to have the same feelings & itch down the back area. I was wondering if its possible for the yeast infection to spread to the anal area?

    • ANSWER:
Yes. They can spread anywhere moist and dark, including your armpits, your mouth, and any fold of skin. Take a yeast infection cure, and in the future, always eat active culture yogurt while taking antibiotics to keep repopulating the healthy bacteria in your body. You can eat some now to help the yeast infection cure work better.

      Good luck.

  37. QUESTION:
How can you safely relieve a yeast infection when pregnant.?
I have a yeast infection and I am 9 weeks pregnant. I'm positive it isn't an STD because I just took STD tests as part of prenatal care. I also just got off antibiotics, and did one of those Vagisil tester things. I am seeing my doctor, but not until Thursday, and if you have ever had a yeast infection, you would understand why I don't know if I can wait until then for relief. Is there anything safe I can use until Thursday when I see the doctor?

Can a yeast infection from diabetes be transmitted sexually?
I didn't believe the article I received saying that my yeast infections could be from eating too much sugar until I noticed I started having some symptoms right after eating candy ( Yeah, I know I shouldn't eat it). Anyhow, the symptoms seem to go away when I control my sweet tooth better. But would the same thing happen with someone who got the yeast infection from me. I mean, would the yeast infection be treated (with antibiotics) as an STD?

  39. QUESTION:
How can I avoid a yeast infection while on antibiotics?
I'm on amoxicillin for tonsillitis, and I don't want to get a yeast infection. My boyfriend would prefer that I not get one as well. Is there anything besides eating yogurt I can do? I'll eat it if I have to, but if there's another way that isn't too expensive, I'd like to avoid yogurt. I hate the consistency.

And if I CAN'T avoid it.. what's a good tasting brand? I don't like fruit chunks.

    • ANSWER:
No, not really. Yogurt is your best bet. I like that Dannon Vanilla Yogurt. Also, try McDonald's Yogurt Parfait, they add fresh fruit in it and if you want you can sprinkle granola on top. Tt's only . It's so damn good, I swear!

  40. QUESTION:
What is the most effective way to treat my dog's yeast infection?
Our dog is 5 years old now and for the last month or so, he's had a really bad yeast infection in his ears and around his chin. We've been giving him a prescription from the vet, but it doesn't seem to be working very well. Could you tell me how i can treat it for a long time without having to spend too much money on any kind of medicine?

    • ANSWER:
      FROM THE INSIDE:
I'd first make sure he was on a high quality food without corn or wheat; these are very common empty additives; basically fillers with no nutritional value. They often cause nutritional imbalances and food allergies, making dogs more prone to infections of all types. Pretty much anything you pick up at the grocery store is going to have one or both.
I suggest either Canidae All Life Stages:
      http://www.canidae.com/dogs/all_life_stages/dry.html
Or Wellness by Old Mother Hubbard, either the fish and sweet potato or one of the allergy diets, initially, until you get his system straightened out:
      http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/wellness/dog_index.html
A tablespoon of plain yogurt on his food, once a day, helps re-establish beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract. Often yeast gets out of control when the good bacteria as well as the bad have been killed during a course of antibiotics.
Also try adding a tsp of apple cider vinegar to his water bowl, yeast will not flourish in an acidic environment.
      ON THE OUTSIDE:
For an earwash my vet gave me this recipe:
      1 part apple cider vinegar
      1 part hydrogen peroxide
      1 part water
(I combine 1/2 cup each in a clean empty dish soap bottle with the push-pull top, and refrigerate after using, then allow it to warm up on the counter a bit before re-using; discard any left over after one week and make a fresh batch)
Fill the ear canal with this solution, massage the base of the ear, and allow the dog to shake its head, then wipe with cotton balls. Never stick a q-tip into a dogs ear.
Yeast infection can be treated externally with over-the-counter creams for athlete's foot or vaginal yeast infections (lamisil is our personal favorte) you can smear that in the ears and dab it on his chin; just be sure to soak off any crusts first with a warm wet cloth.

  41. QUESTION:
Can you treat a yeast infection while on antibiotics?
I was prescribes antibiotics for a sore throat, and now I think I'm getting a yeast infection. I know that antibiotics can destroy natural bacteria in your vagina that would normally prevent these infections, but I was wondering if you could treat for the YI while on antibiotics? Or would it not do anything? Is it better to wait after I finish taking the prescribed antibiotics because I'm supposed to be eating it for like 10 days or something.
    Thanks for your help!

    • ANSWER:
Yogurt is good to prevent a yeast infection while on the antibiotic, but to treat it use a product like monistat(any over the counter yeast infection med. They can be used at the same time as your antibiotic.

  43. QUESTION:
What are some alternatives to yogurt that keep yeast down in your body?
I had a UTI and my doctor prescribed me with Bactrim. She told me to eat yogurt to keep from getting a yeast infection caused by the Bactrim ,but I hate yogurt (and I don't want to get a yeast infection) so any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Just treat the yeast infection (if it occurs) with an anti-fungal. The evidence base for yogurt is actually rather weak anyway. And eating it to prevent or treat a local vaginal infection certainly won't work.

Thrush occurs in about 30% of women taking antibiotics.

  44. QUESTION:
How to relieve uti & yeast infection while Preggo?
So I went to the dr and they said I have the start of a uti so they prescribed me anti biotitcs that are safe during pregnancy although today I started noticing the antibiotics are giving me a yeast infection. It's very uncomfortable having both and I left a message to the dr but its after hours so have to wait until tomorrow. Anyways I have a constant urge to pee and that's the worst part how can I ease this annoying problem? Any suggestions????

    • ANSWER:
You can relieve the yeast infection by using natural methods like yogurt, while maintaining proper hygiene. Also, continue following your doctors advice about treating the UTI.

  45. QUESTION:
Should I finish my antibiotics before taking meds for my yeast infection?
I have 4 more days of antibiotics for my uti infection. Because of this I now have a yeast infection as well :( Since I heard that the antibiotics are the reason why I now have a yeast infection (because all of the good bacteria is being killed as well) should I wait until I am no longer taking the antibiotics to start taking something for the yeast infection. I am absolutely miserable and really don't want to wait (the antibiotics are making my throw up).

    • ANSWER:
You can buy OTC Monistat cream that you insert into your vagina. It is anti-fungal cream that kills yeast. I was allergic to it so be careful. I stopped using it because of that and then my doctor prescribed me diflucan, 3 days worth. I don't really think it helped because i have still have a little itching and my vagina is practically swollen now (sorry if tmi) and i have still have discharge. Antibiotics definitely seem to be a friend and an enemy at the same time. Go to www.earthclinic.com, click on ailments and then yeast infection. There are some natural remedies you can try if you want to wait until you finish up your current meds for UTI. Also, eat yogurt or take acidophilus supplements as they contain L.acidophilus, the good bacteria we have in our vagina and digestive tract to keep yeast in check. This should help regulate the ph while taking antibiotics.

  46. QUESTION:
How to prevent from another yeast infection?
Aloha there. I've had a yeast infection and it keeps coming and going but I tried curing it with a few medications that my grandmother adviced me. However I'm scared weather it might effect me seriously or anything like I was wondering weather I should tell my doctor and get some antibiotics to get it fully cured but I'm not sure.

  47. QUESTION:
Does Yeast infection go away when you have your cycle?
I had a yeast infection last week. I knew it was a yeast infection because I had thick whte discharge and irritation. So I bought over the counter meds but my period came. Since you can't use tampons while using the applicators I decided to wait until after my period. But now that my period is over the discharge and irritation is completely gone? Should I take the monistat anyway? I would want to pass a yeast infection onto my boyfriend.

    • ANSWER:
Actually, the burning may be caused by an allergic reaction. A small percentage of woman are allergic to one of the active ingredients in monistat called micanazole.

If you're suffering from an allergic reaction you should let your doctor know so he/she can recommend another cream to use. If you self diagnosed your infection, it would probably be a good idea to stop using it and try something else.

  48. QUESTION:
What are signs of yeast infections in pregnancy?
I have never had a yeast infection and I am 24. Here lately I have had vaginal itching. It does not hurt or burn, just itch. I am 15 weeks and 6 days pregnant and just started noticing. I used a new bubble bath and was not sure if it could be because of that or whether it could be a sign of a yeast infection. Are there any other signs associated with yeast infections. Can you tell me what they are.

    • ANSWER:
I am finally in relief of my recurrent yeast infection in this pregnancy. I have only had a yeast infection ever before in this pregnancy so detecting it was difficult. It started off when i thought my waters had broken as it was so watery. A swab test revealed it was a yeast infection started from antibiotics i had taken. So the doctor gave me a pessary. A couple of weeks later, i had severe itching, and alot of discharge. It was so uncomfortable. The discharge was white/clear and the doctors kept saying it was normal until the doctor called me the other week to tell me my swab test has come back again as a yeast infection. So i again used the pessary and cream overnight and had immediate relief! Phew. I am trying to avoid hot baths, toiletries without a ph balance, also eating natural yogurt helps. Some people have lots of symptoms, some people have one and is hard to detect cause your body is so different in pregnancy anyway. Hope you feel better soon! :)

  49. QUESTION:
with plain yogurt still be effective for yeast infection if I mix it with honey?
I just got off of being on antibiotics for 3 weeks and I think I'm starting a yeast infection (I'm SUPER itchy down there, although I'm only having clear discharge) and I know that plain, sugar-free yogurt is good to help fight off a yeast infection.

The only thing is... I HATE the taste of plain yogurt (so nasty) so I want to mix it with honey, but I don't know if that will cancel out or reduce the benefits of the plain yogurt. I'll obviously suck it up and just eat the plain yogurt if it's better to eat without the honey, but if the honey won't affect anything, then I'll eat it with it.

Does anyone know for sure if it will affect it? Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
Honey contains sugar and sugar helps yeast grow. Plain, not sugar free yogurt can be applied to the infected area.

A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of the bacterial yeast Candida. Candida feed on sugar and multiply very quickly. The best way to kill the Candida bacteria is to simultaneously starve it -- by eliminating sugar from your diet -- and repopulate the beneficial bacteria in your body through the use of probiotics and antibacterial substances such as yogurt, garlic or hydrogen peroxide.

Food items that end in "ose" contain sugar. This is the break down of honey:
      Fructose: 38.2%
      Glucose: 31.3%
      Maltose: 7.1%
      Sucrose: 1.3%
In short, I'd avoid honey. Real vanilla might work for you though.

      Step 1
Eat plain yogurt (it isn't listed as sugar free) with active probiotic cultures every day. The good bacteria in yogurt will crowd-out Candida yeast and help restore balance to your digestive tract. Non daily yogurts (almond, soy, coconut) also contain probiotics. According to the Candida Diet website, eating sheep or goat yogurt may be better than yogurt made from cow's milk because there could be fewer additives. The more probiotics in your body, the faster the Candida will die off, so you could consider taking a probiotic, like acidophilus in addition to eating yogurt.

      Step 2
Take 600 to 900 mg of garlic supplements daily to fight Candida. The antifungal and antimicrobial properties of garlic will help kill the yeast infection in your body. It does take more garlic than you might care to eat in a day, so look for high-quality, 100 mg freeze-dried garlic capsules. You'll want to take the garlic capsules throughout the day so there is a constant level of garlic in your body. The Natural News website suggests that after your infection is gone, you continue to take 200 to 400 mg of garlic daily to prevent the Candida from returning.

      Step 3
Bathe in a combination of warm water and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide to treat your yeast infection. Hydrogen peroxide is water with one extra oxygen molecule. That extra oxygen helps to destroy bacteria and fungi. You can also make a douche with 1 tsp. of hydrogen peroxide combined with 1 cup of warm water. Use once daily until your symptoms disappear and then use one more day.

  50. QUESTION:
Yeast infection? What to do if already treated it not knowing forsure if its what you have ?
I think I have a yeast infection I looked up all the symptoms I have and it sounds like a yeast infection. I treated my self with the over counter
stuff, even though it says on the box to go to the doctor first to be positive. So this is a first time for me what do I do having already taking the treatment for it?

    • ANSWER:
You can actually buy a test at Target or your nearby pharmacy, if you want to be sure you have a yeast infection. I would suggest that next time of you aren't sure whether to treat for it or not.

Otherwise you could continue the treatment, it just may not work if it ends up not being a yeast infection (hence the test). Also, if you take antibiotics, be sure to eat yogurt to prevent yeast infections.
